i'm joined now by katherine newman from baltimore who wrote the book "rampage, the social roots of school shootings" she's studied many of these kinds of events. i've read a little bit about your research. what have you learned about these shootings that are sort of counterintuitive? people think they know what causes them at times about the columbine. but so many of the things we thought we knew about columbine have turned out not to be true. what do we now know about what causes these kinds of events? >> that's so true. some of the common myths are that these things are spontaneous. they're almost never spontaneous. some of the shootings we studied were planned over a nine-month period. sadly in many instances, there are quite a few people who have an inkling. in some of the school shootings we studied, there were children who didn't come to school that day because they were worried something was going to happen but sadly they never told anyone who could have done anything. and so one of the counterintuitive things we learned was that there's a lot of information often circulating but i

one mile visibility now in baltimore. three in easton. we have four miles visibility in york and also frederick and three in hagerstown. winchester and also culpepper. the satellite and radar picking up on the clouds out there also some fog but most of the rain pushing off into the atlantic as of now. that is some good news and a little bit after a break and then we have some wet weather for the weekend pushing knack. but in the meantime out to baltimore with a little by of speaks of -- peeks of sunshine and that will be the scenario throughout the day. still dealing with a few puffy clouds out there and that will continue even into the afternoon. our next stop is annapolis, along the seven a couple of boats out there. probably be seeing more as we go into the afternoon. but for today, we are dealing with temperatures 50 degrees in baltimore right now. more of the same in easton. take that jacket heading out and about this morning. now a check of the traffic now with angela. good morning. good morning lynette. still looking at a lot of de
